Private Landfill
In 1981, facing increasing dumping fees at the Torrington landfill, TDS acquired 78 acres of land and started the first private landfill in the state of Wyoming. Landfill services are not available to the public but is reserved for waste disposal of TDS customers.
In 2010, facing a growing customer base and increasing land costs, TDS purchased a trash baler. The baler compacts and bundles the trash into 2,200-pound bundles and then the bales are placed in TDS’ landfill. Baling effectively reduces the amount of land needed for an equivalent amount of garbage by 70 percent.
The implementation of a baler, and the use of pit liners, greatly reduces the impact on surface land and ground water. The majority of pubic landfills in the region don't use balers or pit liners.
Before bailing, metal products are separated and collected separately for recycling. Collected metals are removed to a collection site at the TDS yard and then transported by truck to a Denver-based salvager. From Denver the metal is then shipped via rail to Texas where it is processed for recycling. TDS ships approximately 40-tons of scrap metal per month.
Besides solid household and commercial waste and metal, the TDS landfill also recycles cardboard, concrete and asphalt.
The TDS landfill is permitted by the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality and we are a member in good standing of the Wyoming Solid Waste and Recycling Association.
